WASHINGTON -- In a victory for President Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.

A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.

"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.

Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.

The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.

Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price gouging, bid rigging and market allocation.

A cheer went up from the Democratic side of the House when the bill gained 218 votes, a majority. Moments later, Democrats counted down the final seconds of the voting period in unison, and let loose an even louder roar when Pelosi grabbed the gavel and declared, "the bill is passed."

From the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada issued a statement saying, "We realize the strong will for reform that exists, and we are energized that we stand closer than ever to reforming our broken health insurance system."

The bill drew the votes of 219 Democrats and Rep. Joseph Cao, a first-term Republican who holds an overwhelmingly Democratic seat in New Orleans. Opposed were 176 Republicans and 39 Democrats.

Nearly unanimous in their opposition, minority Republicans cataloged their objections across hours of debate on the 1,990-page, $1.2 trillion legislation.

We won another victory. If all of you white wing idiots spent more of your time trying to fix the problem instead of worrying about women's abortions, gays getting married, carrying your idiot sticks (guns) and criticizing Obama, we would listen to your arguement without skepticism. You don't want to be called racist but use trigger words like "you people" "free loaders" "welfare mothers" which are directly pointed at black people. We got a ni*#@r presdient, and we love him; you all need to get over it, he's doing a good job of correcting all of the good ole boy corrupt dealings, and there's much more to come.

The bill will make it through without the abortion funding. It's funny how the right wingers claim they don't want the Government to get between their doctor and their healthcare but they want to dictate to a women whether she has the right to have a private relationship wity her doctor making decisions based on the health of the women and not the stupidity of some idealogues interfearing!

I DO NOT WANT TO FUND OTHER PEOPLES ABORTIONS !!!!!! This whole thing is unconstitutional. To pass something so regressive to freedom is crazy. A margin of 15 votes ?! That's less than 3% of the populus ! So, less than 3% of us call the shots with such BAD judgement ?! I don't call THIS victory for the american people ! I call this servitude to the bureacrats, for evermore, regardless of which party you choose. The next item in their crosshairs is your jobs and your savings. Oh, yes, When they're done screwing up the economy, they'll finish it off with destroying capitalism, and all your freedom to prosper. Utter stupidity, to destroy a system that actually encourages individual success. I'll never bow to THIS stupidity !

YankeeI - the reason why people would be required to buy-in is because of adverse selection. It would be the only way to make the insurance pool work.

For years, car insurance has been a requirement...

Guess you don't have an answer just a talking point!I've had private insurance for my entire life and never been unfairly treated. In fact, before the emergence of the Demoncrat entitlement society, adults realized that it was THEIR responsibility to take care of themselves and their families! then came the freebies that encouraged behavior like getting knocked up simply to get a bigger handout. And here we are today!!!!

Doesn't it trouble you Obamabots that they feel it necessary to criminalize and possibly imprison those who don't buy this insurance scam? If it was so wonderful, wouldn't you think the people would be falling all over themselves to get it? Didn't this scam start out as health CARE reform before it morphed into it's true goal of destroying private insurance. This IS nothing more than takeover of your life from cradle to grave!!!

Wrong as usual! We took another step toward making this an entitlement society where the freeloaders take from the contributors with the help of their corrupt government. The freeloaders are in for a big surprise however. The system they eventually wind up with will kill them quicker than they kill themselves. In addition to the fact that it won't be free, your chronic junkie and alcoholic will no longer be able to simply walk into his/her local emergency room and get immediate help. They'll get in line with the other REAL sick people! As more and more people lose their jobs, there will be less and less for this corrupt government to steal and therefore less to hand over to the non productive. Then watcha you all gonna do? So you think you're a big winner this morning do ya? The tsunami of real change has already started. Remember this thug President chose to not implement the benefits of this scam until 2013. Hope you're still around to celebrate it. By 2013, there won't be a Demoncrat to be found in power. It starts in 2010 and this piece of bs will be dismantled before it even starts. You know you really should take time out of your bust schedule to read the thing before you get another tingle up your leg. You might not be so thrilled after all!!
